WHERE ARE WE?, 2022
In these works, I aim to capture the multifaceted nature of home. Rather than a static place, home became, for me, a state of mind constantly in flux. With each relocation, familiar sights and sounds faded, replaced by new surroundings that felt both foreign and exciting, yet lacked the deep-rooted connection that often defines a sense of belonging. The experience led me to reflect on how "home" can be deeply tied to identity, memory, and the feeling of safety, yet can become unsettled through movement, distance, and time.
This series investigates the evolving concept of "home"—a place that can feel both comforting and disorienting, grounding yet elusive. Created during a pivotal time in my life, these works emerged as I navigated the experience of leaving my birthplace, St. Louis, to move to Houston, all while attending school in Cincinnati. The transitions between these three distinct cities, each with its own cultural landscape, fractured my sense of belonging and stirred an intense questioning of what "home" truly means.
This exploration invites viewers to consider their own definitions of home and the ways in which their surroundings shape them. In a world where mobility and change are increasingly common, many find themselves in a similar state of searching, redefining, and negotiating their sense of place. Through this work, I ask: what does home mean to you, and how does it reflect who you are?
